Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a relatively new therapeutic approach that focuses on the connection between eye position and emotional processing. Developed in 2003 by Dr. David Grand, it emerged from his work with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). The technique involves identifying specific “brainspots”—locations in a person’s visual field that correlate with heightened emotional or physical responses. By maintaining focus on these spots, clients can access and process deeply rooted trauma stored in the subcortical regions of the brain, which are responsible for emotions, memory, and bodily sensations.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, which operates from a “top-down” approach using the conscious mind, brainspotting is considered a “bottom-up” therapy. It targets the body’s somatic responses and unconscious brain activity to facilitate healing. During a session, the therapist uses a pointer to guide the client’s gaze while monitoring physical cues such as facial expressions or body tension. Once a brainspot is located, the client maintains focus on it while exploring associated thoughts and feelings. This process allows for the release of stored trauma without needing to verbally recount distressing experiences.

Brainspotting has shown promise in treating a variety of mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and even physical pain linked to emotional trauma. Research suggests that it may be as effective as other modalities like EMDR. Clients often report feeling more emotionally regulated and physically relaxed after sessions, and the therapy is praised for its gentle, non-invasive nature. It’s particularly beneficial for individuals who struggle to articulate their experiences or feel overwhelmed by traditional therapeutic methods. Brainspotting offers a powerful pathway for healing trauma by bridging the gap between mind and body. Its emphasis on internal awareness and emotional attunement makes it a compelling option for those seeking deeper, embodied therapeutic work.
